Behind Link balance: How Stripe built the stablecoin infrastructure for agentic commerce

文章目录

This week, @Stripe launched @Link balance for AI agents, starting with Instinct, an AI-powered personal assistant.

Link is Stripe's digital wallet, making online payments faster and more secure by letting consumers pay with their saved payment methods.

With Link Agent Wallet, AI agents like @Muse, Grok @bot, and @Instinct can already make purchases on behalf of consumers using payment credentials issued through Link. Shopping through agents is picking up: agentic purchases made with Link grew 38x over the past month, while more than 25% of Muse's weekly users use the agent for shopping.

Until now, consumers have had to manually approve every purchase their agent makes. With Link balance, they can add money to a dedicated balance and set spending limits, so their agents can make purchases without asking for approval every time.

Consumers just add money, set their limits, and let their agent handle the rest. Making this possible is an integrated stack built on stablecoins: Stripe Crypto Onramp converts funds into a dollar-denominated stablecoin on @tempo, @privy_io's non-custodial wallets provide secure key management and transaction signing, and Stripe Issuing enables agents to spend through virtual debit cards.

1. Add funds through Stripe Crypto Onramp

Consumers start by adding money to their Link balance using a debit card. Stripe Crypto Onramp converts those dollars into stablecoins on Tempo, which is then credited to their Link balance.

Consumers can reuse eligible payment details saved with Link. They add dollars and see a dollar balance, without needing to know that stablecoins are involved.

2. Hold funds using Privy’s non-custodial wallet infrastructure

Once converted, stablecoins are deposited into a Privy-powered non-custodial wallet backing the consumer's Link Financial Account.

Privy provides the underlying wallet infrastructure, including secure cryptographic key management and transaction signing, so Link can offer consumers a self-custodial balance without requiring them to manage private keys or interact directly with a blockchain.

Consumers see a USD-denominated balance in Link, while Stripe's Financial Account connects the underlying wallet to Link’s funding and spending features.

This is also the first consumer launch of Stripe Financial Accounts backed by Privy's non-custodial wallets.

3. Give agents permission to spend

Consumers set a maximum amount their agent can spend per purchase without asking for approval. Purchases within that limit can proceed automatically, while larger transactions trigger a human-in-the-loop approval.

Link Agent Wallet enforces these spending limits, so agents can act independently without having unrestricted permission to spend. Privy's non-custodial wallet infrastructure provides secure key management and transaction signing underneath, separating the security of the funds from the permissions granted to the agent.

4. Make purchases with Stripe Issuing

When an agent is ready to make a purchase, Stripe Issuing provides a virtual debit card backed by the consumer's Link balance.

The card lets agents spend stablecoin-backed funds wherever the card is accepted. For merchants, nothing changes. They accept payments through their existing checkout flows without needing to support stablecoins.

Stablecoins as infrastructure for an agentic world

AI agents can already find products, compare prices, and make recommendations. With Link balance, consumers can authorize them to take the next step: making purchases within spending limits they've set in advance.

Link balance brings together Stripe's crypto and payments infrastructure in a consumer product that looks and feels like any other digital wallet. Stablecoins power the movement and storage of funds, while consumers interact with a familiar dollar balance.

It's also an example of what businesses can build with the Stripe Crypto stack: products that combine stablecoin money movement, secure wallets, and everyday payments without asking consumers to navigate the underlying complexity.
