Hello! My name is Roth. If you've been an artist since 2020, you're probably familiar with the dismal curse that plagues everyone's accounts randomly. Some people call it a Ghost Ban or a Search Ban.
Almost everyone has come to terms with one unified term: The Shadow ban. You're going to want to familiarize yourself with this term for here on out. It can (And will) dictate your future and growth an artist on this platform.
On Twitter, there are 4 Different levels of "Shadow Bans", Each layer significantly worse than the last.
The four-layer-cake of bullshit, has four layers of inconvenience. We shall call these a** Search ban**, a** Search Suggestion ban**, A Shadowban, and a Full-Account-Label Shadowban.
First level - Search Bans.
Search bans are the most common variant of the Shadowban. New accounts start out with a low level Search Ban, as a countermeasure to mitigate** bots and spam**. Your account is essentially hidden from a portion of the mainline algorithm until twitter's algorithm figures you're a "human".
In order to pass this ban, continue posting and participating in normal account behavior - make sure to limit comments to people who don't follow you, or you don't follow, as twitter has been known to limit people who comment frequently as "spam accounts."
....Whatever that's supposed to mean, considering there's repost and comment bots everywhere. My* speculation?* The system isn't detecting who's a bot or not, to get rid of bots, its Detecting who's a human so they can enforce stricter, draconic posting rules.
Second level - Temporary labels.
Imagine you're minding your business with your new twitter account. Sharing some art, replying to your mutuals. You know, normal twitter business. This is the story for Almost every artist on twitter nowadays.
Suddenly, Boom! You're locked out of your account, because twitter accuses you of being a bot. But clearly you're not, right? You just got verified by the big X themself, right? Wrong. Because twitter just put a deathmark on you.
Welcome to the death mark - "Temporary Labels."

A Temporary Label is something twitter usually puts on your account for one of the few reasons:
• You recently broke a rule. **Big Brother is angry, and wants to keep an eye on you.
• You did nothing at all. Big Brother *THINKS * you're gonna break a rule, and Still wants to keep an eye on you.
• You were recently participating in behaviors the algorithm perceives as "*Negative." *This is inconsistent though, as twitter's "For You" page is usually chock full of negativity, anger, hatred, and ignorance. The algorithm is very inconsistent on what it perceives as "negative" and is subject to change. Big brother's... Keeping an eye on you, regardless.
• You posted something that was recently flagged as "Adult content." Twitter is unanimously HORRIFIC **at what it grades as adult content. This is because the system is completely automated. If X thinks your normal Kitty picture... is a different kind of kitty... Big brother wants to keep THREE eyes on you. This will be important later.
Temporary labels are the second to only markers of a true, authentic shadowban. They limit your visibility to **no one outside of your followers, AND de-prioritize you from appearing on their feeds.
When i say De-prioritize, I MEAN DE PRIORITIZE. ** As a victim of ~~relentless, back to back shadowbans~~~~,~~ I have 136,000 followers, and a vast majority of my followers have reported my posts **disappearing from their "for you," and in rare cases, their "Following" page in real time.
Others report not seeing anything from people they follow themselves until weeks or days later, or anything at all.
Though speculation, most people highly believe these labels send a Flare of sorts to the twitter algorithm, to treat your account with Higher, unfair scrutiny.
HOW TO ESCAPE TEMPORARY LABELS:
Many verified accounts that claim they are experts in the field of shadowbans will tell you to continue posting, or engaging in "Healthy" activities that prove you're a human. If you follow these instructions, your account has a very high chance of being terminated.
If you continue to post any media or comment on the posts of people you dont follow, Twitter can and will perceive this as additional bot activity, extend the ban, or invoke an immediate Full-Account-Label Shadowban.
The safest way to escape these shadowbans is keeping account activity to a minimum. Do not post media, like gifs or mp4s. Absolutely under no circumstance post extra links. This label is a prison, and posting** ANY media is begging the warden to beat you. **Post text sparingly. Wait it out. These labels usually go away within 7 days. If you're lucky (Or have Premium), twitter will eventually waive the label, though they don't always announce it. The best way to check is use a Shadowban Checker tool to stay on the safe side.

LAYER 3: SHADOWBANS.
Here is where we enter the meat of the conversation; the shadowban. In short, a shadowban is a type of algorithmic BAN of your account from appearing on the "For you" page, choking your reach, and making it impossible to grow. Twitter likes to dress it up and call it a "Potentially sensitive content" label.
Shadowbans are sneaky. You'll never know if you get one unless you use a specific tool. but here's a short list of all the known causes of shadowbans:
• **Posting media that contains sensitive content without marking it.
• Replying constantly, or often to people you don't follow.
• Retweeting or quoting posts from an account that later gets marked as sensitive.
• Quoting a post that later gets marked as sensitive. YOUR quote specifically can also get marked as sensitive.
• Prolonged inactivity.
• Logging into an account from a different location.
• using VPNs while logging in.
• Liking too many posts, too fast.
• Retweeting your mutuals' posts too often. Like the art your mutual makes? Forget it. Engaging with the same account too often can be a spam marker. ** ** • Posting ANY MEDIA too quickly, and too often, without being verified. Sometimes, posting more than 2 media posts A DAY can cause this.
**• Spam reports. Do not believe the lies. Spam reporting accounts CAN get them shadowbanned, and it is possible to "game" the system despite X's "EFFORTS" to prevent it.
Shadowbans basically prevent your own followers, strangers, or anyone except those that constantly engage with your content, (and i mean, constantly. like, under-every-single-goddamn-post constantly.) from seeing your posts.
**They are an ultimate stop-cap for productivity and are designed to make it hard for your account to grow.
The literal only way for a shadowbanned account to grow is to have powerful mutuals retweeting your posts often. Otherwise, your account will stagnate.
Shadowban durations fluctuate between users. Most durations last about 3 days for verified users, and A WHOPPING 10 DAYS **for unverified users.
Symptoms of a shadowban include:
• An uptick of accounts that normally are under the "show probable spam" barrier, appearing under your general comments.
• *Sudden, shear drops in engagement with your content, comments, or posts. you can check this by checking if your posts are being liked by new people, or only your followers.
*• *Your account becoming unsearchable without enabling the "show potentially sensitive content" barrier under your user settings.
***• Your post seem to get likes from smaller accounts with no profile, or a bunch of numbers. These are sometimes bot accounts that like user posts to seem more human.
HOW TO ESCAPE A SHADOWBAN:
Post nothing. This is the only way to escape a shadowban. Short and sweet. Do not repost. Do not post. Do not comment. Don't even Like if you must: If a post you like gets marked as sensitive, twitter can punish you.
Remain in a complete state of inactivity. *Any activity that you participate in can accelerate the ban or prolong it, and there's just too many variables, especially if you're an artist. **Use tools to see if you're still shadowbanned.
Do not participate in any activity. Once the ban clears, ease your way back into posting. One post a day, nothing more, nothing less. After 5 days pass, slowly up the intergern of your posts back into normal range. do not rush this delicate stage.
***Other than that. there's really not much you can do. GETTING VERIFIED NEVER SAVES YOU FROM THIS FORM OF SHADOWBAN. This rumor was used as propaganda to encourage people to fear-buy premium to avoid a shadow ban, and i fell for this. It's snake oil, and never works.
Your engagement can't be boosted or prioritized if theres no one to see it. Understand? Be patient. Dont rush. Think tactically. AND AVOID POSTING ANY MEDIA TWITTER CAN PERCIEVE AS CONTANING SENSITIVE CONTENT!!
LAYER 4: ROCK BOTTOM HELL.
THE ACCOUNT LABEL SHADOWBAN.
If you're a small account and get this label, know that it's OVER**. there's no hope for you unless you have friends or mutuals willing to back you up and help you grow.
This profane form of shadowban is so vile, you'd think Arasaka themself thought it up in a looney bin. The full account label shadowban, is a shadowban that Hides your posts from everyone.
Known causes are as follows:
• Randomly. Sometimes without reasonable cause.
• Multiple posts marked as sensitive over a duration of time. Even if you marked them yourself.
• Rampant spam reports.
The only way** for people to see people marked as "potentially sensitive" by the algorithm, is for them to have the barrier off, which is turned on by default. Otherwise, they wont even know you dissapeared. It bars all of your followers from seeing your content, bans you completely from the FYP and marks EVERYTHING you post as sensitive. EVERYTHING.
It is essentially the death of an account unless you already have a big following. X will sometimes notify you of this change. Most of the time, they wont. and there is no telling or prediction when X will flip its top.
The mark of death.
HOW TO ESCAPE THE IMPOSSIBLE HELL
**There is no way. Not conventionally. And not unless you want to pay 8$ to X. If you're not willing to, it's time to start over. If you're not willing to struggle to grow, if you're not already posting sensitive content, There's no winning here.
In order to be free of this label, YOU MUST buy premium, and request a review. There's no text you can send. No support system to reach out to. no number to call. No human to talk to. No support that isn't robotic. No human to plead to. Just one button. and the stake of your entire account.
The ultimate display of greed and mockery.** Sometimes the notification of the label is Purposefully buried under months OR YEARS of notifications. good luck finding it.
BONUS: SENSITIVE CONTENT APPEAL BANS!
If your account is older than 2020, you may vaguely remember a period of twitter where you would post an artpeice, just to suddenly not be able to post it. The post would be marked as adult content, without a barrier to tell people it was adult, and was completely unappealable. It forced people to log in to view the post, and **90% of the time was innacurate.
Well, it gets worse.**
If you accumulated a lot of these posts in the past that are marked as sensitive OR "adult", twitter with AUTO DENY appeals you make on your media that was marked as sensitive, unless your media was flagged at the exact time you posted it.
You can know if you got appeal banned if Twitter stops notifying you if a post you made was flagged as sensitive content. It becomes impossible to appeal the post unless you force a glitch to let you reach the appeal page. **I know about this, because I, myself, are appeal banned.
As far as i know, theres nothing you can do. **The only option left is to post sparingly and pray your account doesnt get hit with a Shadowban. Twitter knows about this bug and has done nothing about it. Speculation is because it's a trap, to get you to post more media marked as sensitive, and eventually, THE ACCOUNT LABEL SHADOWBAN.
Conclusion
Shadowbans have many causes, and they're always subject to change. As time passes and I gain more knowlege on how shadowbans work, I will continue to update these articles to help as many artists as i can.
There's lots of resources for people who really want to learn more about shadowbans, but if youre just an artist trying to live, arm yourself with this knowlege to avoid your account being permantently limited.
