cold outreach playbook that gets me a 70% reply rate
cold outreach is one of the easiest and most effective ways to grow
but for some reason, most people approach it like this:
more contacts = more results
quality barely matters
I think it’s the opposite
the biggest factor in your conversion is everything you do before sending the message
with bad outreach, people see your name and immediately think “spam”
with good outreach, they’re actually glad you reached out and happy to reply
you want the second
the formula is pretty simple:
right person + good message = desired result
1. find the right person
this is where most of the work happens
first, clearly define the target and the problem being solved
no matter how good the message is, if there’s no need for the solution, nothing will convert
I recently wrote a whole article on how to find the right people:

2. write a message they actually want to answer
again, everything starts with research
manually verify what AI gives you and don’t outsource the whole process to it
understand who the person is, what they care about, what they’re working on, and what’s been happening around them recently
that’s usually where the best angle for the message comes from
people can tell when you’ve actually spent time understanding them
and they can definitely tell when you’ve just changed the name in a template
most cold outreach looks something like this:
“Hi Alex, my name is Paul, I’m from {company}. I saw that your company {mention random article}. At {company}, we’re currently working on X and Y and would love to connect and discuss how we could help. Would you have 20 minutes for a quick call?”
now imagine receiving that yourself
why would you reply?
there’s basically no reason to
so here are the rules I use to get reply rates as high as 70%:
- your first message should start a conversation, not sell the product
don’t explain every feature
don’t dump all your achievements
nobody is buying from you after one cold message anyway
your only goal is to get a reply and start a conversation
- keep it short
two short paragraphs max
ideally, the whole thing should fit on one phone screen without scrolling
- no links or attachments
there’s no trust yet
random links and files just make the message feel more like spam
- no formatting
no bold
no italics
no perfectly structured sales message
just write like a normal person
- don’t ask for a call
especially not the classic:
“do you have 20 minutes this week?”
everyone’s calendar is already full
asking someone to give you 20 minutes before they even know why they should care adds unnecessary friction
get the reply first
- ask one question
one simple question at the end
that’s it
make answering you as easy as possible
all of these rules have the same goal:
reduce friction and increase trust
there are also a few things you can use when they’re genuinely relevant:
-
mention a mutual connection
-
reference an existing conversation with someone else at the company and ask for clarification on one specific thing
-
give them a quick reason to trust you
-
congratulate them on something recent
anything that makes the message feel like there’s already some context between you
for example:
“hey! met with Alex yesterday and he was really excited about what you guys are doing with {}
I know a few people in real estate who are actually looking for something like this. would an intro be useful?”
simple
there’s context
there’s a reason you’re messaging
there’s something useful for them
and there’s one easy question to answer
3. organize the process properly
don’t spam a database of 10,000 people hoping for a 5% reply rate
focus on quality
10-12 highly targeted messages a day can be enough
send them through messengers from a real personal account
ideally with your real name, real photo, and Premium if the platform has it
people trust people much more than random company accounts
X is especially good for this
mutual followers instantly give context and credibility
the whole idea is simple:
send fewer messages
do more research
make every message feel like it could only have been sent to that person
